Hand Surgery

Hand surgery is one of the main focuses of my clinical and scientific work since the beginning of my career. On that basis I was appointed Professor of Hand- and Microsurgery at the University Hospital of Aachen in 1987. Again in Zurich and now in Vienna hand surgery is a major part of my daily practice including trauma, tumour surgery, infections and congenital malformations in the hand. In Switzerland I became board certified as hand surgeon. In the following chapters you find information on the most frequent elective operations in the hand: Trigger finger, carpal tunnel syndrome, ulnar nerve compression syndrome and congenital malformations of the hand. My personal interest in hand surgery led to extensive research work in the field of carpal tunnel syndrome. Our working group could show that the open decompression of the median nerve is even more efficient than the endoscopic procedure.
