Reconstructive Surgery

Reconstruction of form and function by reconstructive surgery may become necessary as a consequence of trauma, tumour or infection in all different regions of the human body. Techniques of reconstructive surgery are also used to correct congenital malformations. The development of sophisticated techniques of local tissues transfer within the last years have been improving the functional and aesthetic results obtained. Complex free tissue transfer from one region to a distant region became only possible by the introduction of microvascular surgery into the field of plastic and reconstructive surgery. Even skin grafting and lipofilling have been significantly improved by technical developments and have got extended indications. For me reconstructive surgery and aesthetic surgery cannot be separated: Every reconstruction has not only to fulfil functional demands but also aesthetic demands on a highest level possible.
